What You Need
Original recipe yields 10 servings
2 Tbsp. butter
1 small onion, finely chopped
2 Tbsp. flour
1-1/2 cups milk
1-1/2 cups KRAFT Shredded Italian* Five Cheese Blend
2 lb. fresh white asparagus spears, trimmed, blanched and cut into 2-1/2-inch lengths

Let's Make It
Heat oven to 425º F.
Melt butter in medium saucepan on medium heat. Add onions; cook and stir 3 to 5 min. or until crisp-tender. Whisk in flour; cook 2 min. Gradually whisk in milk until blended; cook on medium heat 3 to 5 min. or until thickened, stirring constantly. Add cheese; cook 1 min. or until melted, stirring constantly.
Add asparagus; mix lightly. Spoon into 1-1/2 qt. casserole.
Bake 15 min. or until heated through and lightly browned.
Blanching Fresh Asparagus
To blanch fresh asparagus, add the spears to a large pot of boiling water. Cook, uncovered, for 2 to 3 minutes. Drain, then immediately plunge the asparagus into a bowl of ice water to stop the cooking. When completely cool, drain and pat dry.
Sprinkle with 1 Tbsp. chopped fresh thyme before serving.
Substitute 5 cups blanched small broccoli or cauliflower florets for the cooked asparagus.
Prepare using KRAFT Shredded Sharp Cheddar Cheese.
