Place chicken with salt and pepper in 2qts. of water - cook until tender - let cool (reserve stock). Cut into small cubes.
Dumplings: Mix 3 cups of flour, baking powder, salt and shortening together. Add milk, water and egg. This will make a sticky paste. Turnout on floured board and knead remaining flour until it becomes a large ball. Roll out thin and cut into small strips.
Heat stock to a boiling point. Drop strips into stock and place lid on pot. Turn off heat and leave covered for 25 minutes. Add chicken. Do not stir, just shake the pot.
