2 Tbsp shortening
1/4 cup sugar
1 egg
3/4 cup dark molasses
1 tsp salt
2 1/4 cups whole wheat flour
3/4 cup yellow corn meal
1 1/2 tsp baking powder
1 3/4 cup buttermilk
1 1/2 tsp baking soda, dissolved in 1 Tbsp. hot water
3/4 cup raisins

Let's Make It

Cream shortening and sugar. Add egg and molasses. Add remaining ingredients.

Spoon into five well greased vegetable cans, just over half full. Cover with greased foil for lids.

Set on rack in pot that has boiling water half way up sides. Cover pot and steam for 2 1/2 hours. Replace water as needed to keep level at half full.
