Heat Crisco in a skillet. Add the flour and quite a bit of salt. Add pepper to amount you like. Stir over med heat until brown. Stir constantly and you can decide the color you like. We do ours until it becomes a deep brown color.
When you are happy with color use the size of a bowl that will fit your family, pour it full of milk. Add the milk from the bowl into the skillet. Stir fast and constant to omit lumps. If it thickens too much on you add a little more milk. Get it going at a rolling boil.
