Tear the angel food cake into approximately 1-2 inch pieces and place them into the bottom of a 9 x 13 cake pan.
Mix the Jell-O and boiling water until Jell-O is dissolved. Add the 1/2 cup of cold water and thoroughly mix. When Jell-O has cooled slightly, add the thawed strawberries and the syrup to the Jell-O mixture. Spoon the Jell-O/strawberries/juice over the angel food cake, making sure that each piece of cake is coated with at least the juice. Once the Jell-O/strawberries/juice is completely poured over the cake, press down lightly so that the cake absorbs the juice.
"Frost" the top of the cake with the Cool Whip and place the halved or sliced fresh strawberries over the top of the Cool Whip. Refrigerate at least 45 minutes to one hour.
