Original recipe yields 1 serving
6 cups dry bread cubes
4 cups scalded milk
1 Tbsp butter
1/4 tsp salt
3/4 cup sugar
4 eggs
1 tsp vanilla
Sauce:
1/2 cup sugar
2 Tbsp cornstarch
1 cup boiling water
1/8 tsp salt
1/8 tsp nutmeg
1 1/2 Tbsp lemon juice OR vanilla

Lightly butter 9x13 casserole dish. Put in bread cubes. To the scalded milk add the butter, salt, and sugar.

Beat the 4 eggs in a separate bowl. Very slowly pour the milk mixture over the eggs, just a little at a time so as not to cook the eggs. Add the vanilla. Stir. Pour mixture over bread crumbs.

Place casserole dish in a larger casserole dish and surround with water, making a bay-marie. Bake in oven for approx. 50 minutes at 350 degrees F.

Sauce: Cook 1st 5 ingredients. Add juice or vanilla.
