If you’re planning on making baked potatoes but find this is made more complicated by the fact that you don’t know how to bake a potato, we’ve got good news for you! It’s not that tough and we’re here to help you through it. Other (perfectly delicious) potato recipes may require complex mashing, scalloping or Julienne…ing, but you’ll find none of that when making baked potatoes. All you need is an oven, a baking sheet, some utensils and, of course, the potato. For your classic baked potato, and to follow our instructions, you’re going to want to choose a russet potato.

How to Bake a Potato – Preparation

First heat oven to 425°F. Then wash potatoes in the sink, being sure to scrub to remove any dirt. Be sure to dry the potato after washing it.

How to Bake a Potato – Instructions

  1. Using a fork, poke a few holes into the potato. (This lets steam escape so there will be no exploding potatoes in the oven!)
  2. Place potatoes onto a baking sheet for easy baking.
  3. Bake potatoes 45 minutes to an hour (or until tender.)
  4. Serve potatoes split open and fluff up with a fork.
  5. Add butter, chives, cheddar cheese, chopped broccoli or crispy bacon as you like!
