Celebrate Classic Summer Favorites

Sometimes we get so caught up in new food trends that we forget how much we love some of the simple summer classics—like chicken or burgers on the grill or a big slice of watermelon. Well, it’s time to bring back the good old days and the good old dishes that went with them. Here’s how some all-time summertime favorites can fit into your meal plan perfectly.

Add veggies. Instead of barbecuing chicken parts with the skin still on, try our Grilled Chicken with Savory Summer Vegetables. In this version, we add red pepper and asparagus for fresh flavor—and vitamins A and C. We also keep fat under control by using boneless, skinless chicken breasts and basting them with KRAFT Sun-Dried Tomato Dressing.

Try some simple swaps. Our Best-Ever Cheeseburgers give you the flavor of a great burger with smart ingredients. They begin with extra lean ground beef, KRAFT 2% Milk Singles, and whole-wheat buns. Top them with sliced fresh veggies.

Flavor with less fat. Many potato salads use full-fat mayo as their main dressing. But you can easily trade the traditional version for a blend of lower-fat and higher-flavor condiments. We used MIRACLE WHIP Light Dressing, KRAFT Light Zesty Italian Dressing, and GREY POUPON Dijon Mustard. The result? Our Creamy Potato Salad Made Over has 190 fewer calories and 23.5 fewer fat grams per serving than the classic recipe.

Treat yourself right. If you love watermelon, serve our Watermelon Fruit Bowl for dessert. It’ll add extra pizzazz to your picnic, thanks to its clever presentation and another summertime favorite as an ingredient: JELL-O Sugar Free Gelatin.

Make a smarter sipper. If you go out for a small root beer float, you could rack up 160 calories. You can do better by making your own at home.
